At Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines, 28 Citadel Men are memorialized on Tablets of the Missing. Another six Citadel Men are interred in the cemetery.

Frederick William Beidelman, Jr. The Citadel, Class of 1943 Lieutenant, U.S. Navy United States Naval Reserve Entered the Service From: Florida Service #: 0-116717 Date of Death: October 26, 1944 Memorialized: Tablets of the Missing Manila American Cemetery Manila, Philippines Awards: Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart

A naval aviator, he was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valor in action while flying torpedo bombers. First award on Feb 4 ’43 while in action against a Japanese force of 20 destroyers with air cover from 20-30 fighters. He achieved a direct torpedo hit on one of the destroyers. Second award for action Oct 25 ’44 in the Mindanao Sea while flying against a Japanese force of 2 battleships and 2 destroyers escorted by fighter aircraft. Despite his plane being damaged, he pressed home the attack and achieved a hit on an enemy battleship.

2Lt. Pope Lott Browne USAAC Citadel ’33 was captured when US and Philippine forces surrendered and was part of the Bataan Death March. He was being transported to Japan aboard the Arisan Maru when she was sunk by a US submarine. His class ring is in the Citadel museum.

2Lt. Bryant was taken prisoner by the Japanese and subsequently placed aboard the Oryoku Maru for transport to Japan. The unmarked ship was attacked and sunk by US aircraft. 100 prisoners died of suffocation or dehydration prior to the sinking. 200 were killed in the bombing or shot in the water as they attempted escape. 16 were subsequently executed by the Japanese. Lt. Bryant’s body was never recovered.

Transferred to and later graduated from West Point. Working in the Philippines in the insurance business, he re-joined the service following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Present for the surrender negotiations that led to the Bataan Death March. Lost during the attack on the Japanese POW ship Brazil Maru.

Survived the sinking of the Japanese POW ship Oryoku Maru, was subsequently loaded aboard the Enoura Maru for transport to Japan. Many of the POWs died due to illness; others in an attack on the ship by US aircraft. Many wounded in the attack were allowed by the Japanese to die of their wounds. Lt. Ford’s body was never recovered.

Died as a POW in the Philippines. Major Godwin was imprisoned at the infamous Cabanatuan camp. He died when the Ornyki Maru, the Japanese POW ship he was on, was bombed and sunk.

Long was the pilot of a B-25C bomber assigned to the 11th Bombardment Squadron. On June 3, 1942 he took part in a flight of six B-25s from Dinjan, India to attack Lashio, Burma and then proceed over the Himalayas to a base in Kunming, China. The raid on Lashio was successful and the flight withdrew on course to Kunming at 10,000 feet in a thick overcast. Suddenly, Long’s and two other planes crashed into the side of a mountain. The others barely missed hitting the ground after pulling up sharply. Source: findagrave.com

Serving as bombardier on a B-24J bomber, he was wounded when the aircraft was shot down and captured by the Japanese. Seriously wounded, he was denied medical care and died of his wounds. He was cremated and buried at a Buddhist temple near Ofuna, Japan. His remains were later recovered and transferred to the Manila American Cemetery.
