Fred B. Shifflet, Jr.

Lieutenant Shifflet was one of a few American fighter pilots able to get his plane, a borrowed P-40, off the ground during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He made a circle of Pearl Harbor to seek out enemy aircraft, flew over Hickam Field and was filled with “friendly” AA fire. He deadsticked his plane back to Wheeler Field to land on flat tires.

Lieutenant Shifflet and his P-38G Lightning were lost on March 3, 1943, at the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. He and two other members of his squadron had shot down five Zeros before they were shot down themselves. Lt. Shifflet’s plane was seen to crash into the sea 20 miles east of Tami Island. He had ten enemy planes to his credit when he was lost. He was officially declared dead on December 20, 1945.

The Fred B. Shifflet memorial scholarship fund was initiated at The Citadel in 1991 from the estate of his mother, Estelle M. Shifflet. The first award was made in 1997.
